UX project case study: Building control platform
This project was for a business unit within Wells Fargo known as the Building Control Group (BCG).
-
BCG has purchased software used to manage environmental systems (security, temperature, light, occupancy, electrical and water consumption, etc.) of corporate facilities.
-
The Graphical User Interface (GUI) layer will run on top of a third-party platform software layer and needs to be customized and optimized for the user segments within BCG.
-
To drive consistency across the corporate global real estate footprint, the BCG asked for my team’s assistance with the design of the GUI layer.
-
My role as lead designer:
-
Assist with user research
-
Identify key use cases and make design recommendations
-
Create and iterate wireframes and interaction designs based on those recommendations
-
Obtain stakeholder acceptance of the UX recommendations and wireframes
-
The users of the current system and its generic interface fell into many categories:
-
3rd party building technology support vendors (contractors)
-
3rd party facility support vendors (contractors)
-
Internal facility support team members
-
Regional engineering management
-
BCG Customer solutions center
-
BCG Sustainability team
-
BCG Leadership
The user research approach was to interview 50 users in order to define user segments, create personas, and identify key use cases.
Following the user research analysis, I recommended a set of wireframes be made to fit the key use cases that would be accessible, mobile-friendly, and emphasize creating an audit trail as work is transferred between different user segments.
I created and iterated wireframes over a period of two months with weekly design reviews with the project team consisting of developers, project leaders, and stakeholders.
At the time I left Wells Fargo, the development and implementation of the first phase of the GUI was under way.
